Plastic waste in the oceans is a global problem: According to a study published in the scientific journal “Science” about 8 million tons of this
waste are released into the oceans.
Plastic in the sea and on the beach
Although Switzerland is a landlocked country, we too contribute to global marine pollution and our waters also contain microplastics. Microplastic is found in all Swiss waters, even in our mountain lakes.
Animals and plastic
Plastic endangers our marine animals as well as ourselves. Anything less than five millimeters in size is considered a microplastic and is mistaken for food by marine animals. Turtles, whales, fish and seabirds die of plastic waste by the thousands every year.
